![]() ![]() Star Trek at it's core, is an exposition based show. R52 You mentioned a lot of the points I wanted to make! They are clearly trying to be more cinematic with Discovery, which is great, but Star Trek has never been a cinematic show (even the movies with the exception the Kelvin ones). Not sure DSC has found its voice in this regard yet. Audiences usually remember a great story arc, a remarkable character or a profound message. Great SFX look good, but that's not what a show is going to be remembered for. Then there is so much fan service that the writers feel compelled to do which prevents them from finding the show's own Star Trek voice. ![]() Or think the overdeveloped Klingon look leading to decreased abilities for the actors to act (behind all that rubber), or at least two fighting scenes in each episodes, just because you need to spend the budget. Remember the times when outer space was just dark and black with maybe one or two white spots sprinkled in? When I look out the window that still seems more plausible than all the CGI fogs and energy ribbons you see in Sci Fi. Visually, the show has all the bells and whistles. I think - and this is not based on well-founded fact finding, just my hypothesis - that the show has a too large budget, and that it is too self-conscious to write something extraordinary. I also just recently learned that the actress that plays her is married to a woman in real life. R26 Tig Notaro has confirmed she was in fewer episodes in season 3 because of her touring schedule. Yeoh is not in Toronto filming season 4 (she's back in Paris where she lives) and the rumour is the Section 31 series will begin filming later in 2021. This season's they're basically setting up the Section 31 series, but I think they dragged it out too long. R15 Michelle Yeoh was given more to do last season. I think the "saviour of the universe" story of the first two seasons has made her shy away from wanting to be in the center seat. What I do like is the fact that she no longer seems to want the responsibilities of command. Although, I have to be honest, I don't 12 months separated from Discovery is a long enough gap to justify the huge changes in her character. R6 I actually like the soft reboot of Michael's character this season. ![]() R1 Mary Wiseman's husband, Noah really long last name, does ping BUT I actually think he's a really geeky/preppy straight guy. I read that they were planning on focusing more on Michael's quest to find her mother, but the actress who played Michael's mother was arrested last year with possession of cocaine and they weren't sure if they could get her into Canada to film. The main story 'what caused the burn' is really kind of 'meh,' it hasn't captured my attention. It's clear that this season they've tried to move away from the completely interconnected episodes to more of a thread approach (similar to DS9) where the story lines continue into subsequent episodes, but every episode can stand on its own merit to a degree, but this season just seems to lack stakes. I really feel the absences of Anson Mount and Ethan Peck greatly this season, I think they and their characters added a great dynamic to the show and the show falls kind of flat without them. That being said, and I might be in the minority, I still think season 2 was slightly better (I'll reserve final judgment until we see the whole season). The best episode so far was Unification III which didn't feature a single battle or action sequence, it felt much more 'old school' Star Trek. I greatly appreciate the shift towards more character focused stories with less frantic pacing. Overall, I'm really liking this season so far (can't believe it's half over already). But even those two minutes were fun to watch. That dialog sounded like coming straight from a deck of my HR department. More related about the they/them C-story: Those lines about “they” and “them” wasn’t even a story. I don’t have ADD I can handle a story in one piece within 60 minutes. How about telling us more about the more seasoned characters? We get bits and pieces about everybody all the time, but never a dedicated story. Did Saru actually have a story this season? Stamets, Culber, Reno? So many characters are sidelined while we get a rehash of Burnham feeling out of place. Discovery simply has too many main characters that it cannot possibly service sufficiently in 10 – 15 episodes per season. More a comment on the entire season: I am getting more and more frustrated with the lack of depth the show is showing. ![]()
